The latest chess engine: RobboLito 0.085 g3

The latest robbolito chess engine is version g3. The last time I tested version e4 vs Rybka 3 in Fritz GUI saw the former humiliated the latter in crushing style at 30 minutes time control. According to the developer, major changes in the new version are:

1. bishop/knight evaluation fix
2. ponder bug fixed
2. time management changes
3. BTF removed
4. code cleanup
5. code translation

Eager to test it again with Rybka 3.

Old chess programs: Chessmaster 2100, Fritz 3, Chess Genius etc

It's quite interesting to go back to the early development of chess playing programs. I remember, back in 1992 when I bought my first 286 PC and then got my Chessmaster 2100. I played the program regularly, and well, beat its strongest championship setting, it did print certificate for my winning too. Nowdays it's a dream to even draw with the latest Chessmaster if your are not a master. Just for curiousity I searched if the old program are still out there and the result is...YES somebody got the link for it, check it out below:

LINK FOR OLD CHESS PLAYING SOFTWARES

Amazingly the program runs on my Windows Vista using DosBox, still like it much although the graphic is not that fantastic!! No installation is needed, just create a folder, copy the files and run it from there. DosBox link is here: [DosBox Link]

Note that if you are not familiar with the old DOS commands, it would take a while for you to figure out how the DosBox works for you.

Fritz 12 can't even beat old Rybka

Rybka is amazing. Even the old ver.2.2 is already strong enough for the newest Fritz 12. Salute to the Rybka programmer. Simply brilliant!!! The only drawback of Rybka is it is too slow in dealing database search function in aquarium interface.

Fritz 12 vs Rybka 3 (Human Style)

Just got my Fritz 12 from Amazon today. Tried it on my AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60, 2GB RAM HP laptop versus Rybka 3 (both without opening books). With 4 minutes blitz games, Rybka 3 shredded Fritz 12 with 3.5 -0.5 score. My personal opinion is that most of the improvement in the new Fritz are just cosmetics. There is no significant improvement in the engine strength. The tutorials are just samples and look more like advertisment for Chessbase products rather than genuine tutorials. My verdict: If your are looking for the best engine to analyse games - (still) go for Rybka 3.
